Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam
Mumbai: The Congress today said its workers will perform the 'bhumipujan' of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's memorial in Mumbai on April 14 if the BJP-led Maharashtra government fails to do so by then.
"We will wait for the govt to perform the 'bhumipujan' for the memorial, land for which was allotted during the UPA regime," Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) President Sanjay Nirupam said at Vidhan Bhawan.
"If the government fails to do so, we will barge inside the Indu Mill land and perform the bhumipujan ourselves," the former MP said.
"It is disappointing that instead of performing bhumipujan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be on Europe tour," Mr Nirupam said.
The ministers in the BJP-led government take pleasure in making grandiose announcements but nothing is done on ground, he said.
RPI leader Ramdas Athawale should make his stance clear on what his party intends to do if the April 14 'bhumipujan' deadline is missed due to the chief minister's Europe tour, Mr Nirupam said.
There is resentment among Dalits over the delay in performing 'bhumipujan' of the Ambedkar memorial, the Congress leader said.
