Mumbai:
A woman who killed two people while driving drunk in Mumbai has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Nooriya Haveliwala was driving her SUV home from a party in January 2010 when she drove into a police check-point at Marine Drive. A constable and another driver were killed; three people were injured.
A Mumbai court today found Ms Haveliwala guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The court accepted that Ms Haveliwala, a trained beautician, was drunk when the accident took place.
Ms Haveliwala, who had been granted bail in April 2010, was arrested after the court announced its verdict.
Arguing against her sentence, she said that her father has died since the accident and she needs to look after her 80-year-old mother.
