Mumbai:
Police arrested a woman, who impersonating the daughter of West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, allegedly cheated a senior citizen to the tune of over Rs 2.5 crore in three years, on Tuesday.
The accused Parumita Chakraborty (28) alias Bhattacharjee, originally hails from Agartala, police said. Chakraborty, introducing self as the daughter of the Bengal CM, had borrowed cash on different occasions from the victim, Usha Mishra, they said. She did not return the money following which Mishra lodged a police complaint last month. Her aide Aryan was also arrested and police suspect several more persons might be involved in the crime.
According to police, Chakraborty had been staying in a house owned by the 62-year-old victim. "Chakraborty claimed her father had no money after an income tax raid at their residence in West Bengal. Since she spoke fluent English and claimed to own a shop in an Andheri-based mall, the complainant and her family never suspected anything amiss," said Kailash Ghamande, Senior Inspector at Amboli police station. "She borrowed lakhs of rupees several times from the victim on some pretext or other," the officer said, adding the total amount stood at Rs 2.5 crore.
Despite repeated requests, Chakraborty did not return the money, prompting Mishra to lodge a complaint on February 26. The police verified the victim's claims and arrested Chakraborty, Ghamande said, adding further probe was on.
