A tile from the same Elphinstone Road station Foot Overbridge where stampede occurred, fell on a woman
A woman passenger was injured at suburban Elphinstone Road railway station today when part of a tile of a Foot Overbridge (FoB) fell on her on head while she was entering the premises, an official said.
The woman, who is a resident of suburban Chembur, was admitted in nearby KEM hospital. She was taken by the on-duty Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel to the hospital, where her condition is stated to be fine.
The woman was identified only as Anita (38). The incident occurred at around 3.40 P.M at the booking office at the end of the FoB, a Western Railway official said.
Incidentally, it was the same FoB, which links the Elphinstone Road and Parel railway stations, on whose staircase 23 people had died in a stampede on September 29.
The stampede, which led to 23 deaths, allegedly occurred after a tragic mix-up resulting from a flower vendor's cry of "phool gir gaya (flowers have fallen)", being mistaken as "pul gir gaya (the bridge has fallen)".
Apart from the alleged mix-up, four trains had rolled in at the same time and a large crowd had poured into the bridge which was already full of people trying to take shelter from a sudden downpour. Commuters slipped and people fell on them.
This new incident has occurred after a high-level expert committee was constituted to look into the stampede. Railway officials who took 18 months to call for bids to build a new foot overbridge, have not been let off the hook after the incident. The inquiry will look into the delay to call for bids to build the bridge has been constituted by the Railway Board.
