Muzaffarnagar:
On directives of the National Human Right Commission cell in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on a police officer and a doctor of the district jail here in connection with custodial death of a prisoner, officials said.
The rights body ordered the state government to conduct an inquiry against the then SHO of Titawi police station Subodh Kumar and jail doctor A Saxena for the custodial death of Manoj Kumar two years ago, they said.
The commission also said that Rs 1 lakh should be provided to the family of the deceased, they said, adding Kumar of Barwala village, who was arrested in a theft case, succumbed to his injuries in the jail. During magisterial inquiry both the officials were found guilty.
In separate case, the commission has asked the police to probe the alleged fake encounter of a youth Nitu Kail, who was killed in the district in 2004.
