Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh:
Five women drowned and 12 others were injured when a vehicle in which they were travelling lost control and plunged into a canal near Kadhal town in the district, police said today.
The incident took place last evening when the victims were returning in a 'jugaad' (locally-made motor vehicle) after attending a funeral ceremony.
While the bodies of three victims were fished out this morning, rescue workers are trying to retrieve two other bodies, said officials.
The victims - Kailashu, Vimala, Rameshu, Sumitra and Kaushal - were all residents of Titerwara village in the district, they said.
