Muzaffarnagar: A 40-year-old mother of three allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh after a video clip of her gang-rape was circulated on WhatsApp.
The woman took poison after she found out that the clip was being circulated on the instant messaging service, said senior police officer Pradeep Gupta.
One person has reportedly been arrested.
The woman, a social health activist affiliated to a government programme, was allegedly gang-raped by four men on Sunday at a field near her house. The rapists allegedly filmed the crime.
The police say according to villagers, the woman had been harassed by one of the rapists for months.
After her death was reported, there were protests by hundreds of activists who have demanded financial help for the woman's family.
