Nagpur:
A police inspector was arrested on Wednesday after a dramatic chase by police officers of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe.
Umesh Sopan Machhindra, a Police Inspector attached to the Crime Branch, had demanded Rs 5 lakh from a person, facing criminal charges, for not arresting him and threatened him that if he did not pay the money, he would be implicated in more cases, the ACB said.
The accused, from whom Mr Machhindra demanded bribe, was facing some criminal charges and was on a conditional bail granted by the High Court after a local court rejected his bail application, the anti-graft agency said.
Mr Machhindra allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh from him and had received the first instalment of Rs 1.5 lakh.
According to ACB, he was going to receive Rs 50,000 on Wednesday.
"However, the complainant approached the ACB and accordingly a trap was laid at the Crime Branch this afternoon," Deputy Superintendent of Police, ACB, Milind Totre, told Press Trust of India.
When Mr Machhindra realised that he was being trapped, he started running away from the Crime Branch office located at the New Administrative Building in Divisional Commissionerate compound.
"The ACB sleuths gave a hot chase and he was caught on the street. However, he managed to throw away the wads of currency notes while running," Mr Totre added.
The ACB later placed him under arrest, he added.
