CNG prices hiked by a steep Rs 3.70 per kg in Delhi

CNG prices hiked by a steep Rs 3.70 per kg in Delhi

The hike follows last week's steep increase in petrol price.

New Delhi: After petrol and diesel, price of CNG was today hiked by a steep Rs 3.70 per kg in Delhi, the second increase in rate in two and half months.

Price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) sold to automobiles in the national capital has been increased from Rs 41.90 to Rs 45.60 per kg with effect from midnight tonight.

Consumer price of PNG to the households in Delhi was also being revised from Rs 24.50 per scm to Rs 27.50 per scm upto consumption of 30 scm in two months. For consumption beyond 30 scm in two months, the applicable rate in Delhi would be Rs 47.50 per scm.

CNG price was last hiked on June 25 when rates went up by Rs 2 per kg - from Rs 39.90 to Rs 41.90 per kg.

Piped natural gas (PNG) prices too were hiked on that day from Rs 23.50 per standard cubic metre to Rs 24.50 per scm for consumption of up to 30 scm in two months.

The hike follows last week's steep increase in petrol price by Rs 2.35 per litre and diesel rates being raised by 50 paisa per litre as fall in rupee made imports costlier.

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), the firm that sells CNG to automobiles and piped cooking gas (PNG) to households in the national capital, said rates in Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad were being hiked "due to recent weakening of rupee vis-a-vis dollar."

While CNG price in Delhi has been hiked by Rs 3.70 per kg, the same in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad will go up by Rs 4.20 per kg.

"The new consumer price of Rs 45.60 per kg in Delhi and Rs 51.55 per kg in Noida, Greater Noida & Ghaziabad would be effective from midnight tonight," IGL said in a statement.

Price increase in Delhi follows hike in rates in Gujarat and Mumbai. Gujarat government firm GSPC Gas Co (GGC) on September 5 raised CNG price by Rs 3 per kg to Rs 66.50 per kg.

CNG price in Mumbai was hiked by Rs 3 per kg to Rs 38.95 per kg from today.

"Due to differential tax structure in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the applicable price of domestic PNG to households in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad would be Rs 29 per scm upto consumption of 30 scm in two months, which has been increased from existing Rs 26 per scm.

"Beyond consumption of 30 scm in two months, the rate applicable in these cities would be Rs 49.70 per scm," IGL said.

The company said the steep appreciation of US dollar against rupee in the last one month has resulted in major increase in its input cost of gas, which has necessitated the increase in retail prices of CNG and PNG.

IGL buys domestic as well as imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), both of which are billed in US dollars.

Claiming that the increase would not have a major impact on the per km running cost of vehicles, IGL said for autos, the increase would be 11 paisa per km, for taxi it would be 18 paisa per km and in case of buses, the increase would be Rs 1.05 per km, which translates to nearly two paisa per passenger-km.
