New Delhi: There's just no getting Kate Middleton's wedding dress out of the headlines, eight months after she wore it to stunning effect at Westminster Abbey. The dress is now in competition for Design Of The Year, an award presented by Britain's Design Museum. The dress is up against the London 2012 Olympic torch.
On April 29, the world waited with bated breath as much to see what Kate would wear as to watch her walk down the aisle and marry her Prince. The dress, which was almost a State secret, turned out to be a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen ivory creation.
The dress had a strapless, Victorian style corset, narrow at the waist and padded at the hips, with a shorter than expected train.
The dress that looked deceptively simple actually had hours of hard work behind it. The lace appliqué for the bodice and skirt was handmade by the Royal School of Needlework, with individual flowers hand-cut from lace. The back is finished with 58 gazar and organza covered buttons.
The dress may just lose the award to the London 2012 Olympic torch, designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, even though it has been compared to an ice-cream cone.
A high profile panel of judges will decide the winner of the coveted title, which will be announced on April 24 - just over a year after Kate wore the dress.
