Accused couple sets dog on police to evade arrest

Mumbai:

The arrest of two accused in a case of cheating turned out to be a dramatic affair for the police after the accused set their dog on officials who came to arrest them.

Police officials from the Pydhonie police station on Saturday had gone to suburban D N Nagar to arrest Razaq and Zareena Katharia who are accused of cheating a Malegaon-based businessman of Rs 35 lakh.

However, upon reaching their residence the Katharia's set their dog, a Doberman, on the police personnel who quickly beat a hasty retreat to their vehicle, officials said.

The police then called for reinforcements and surrounded Katharias' residence to prevent them from escaping and then managed to subdue the dog.

Once they managed to subdue the dog, the couple surrendered to the police and were taken into custody, officials said. They are in police custody till June 5.

The Katharias' are accused of having sold an old building to the businessman for Rs 35 lakh in 2004 but gave him fake documents due to which he could not take it into his possession, police said.

"The Katharias' were legal owners but gave the trader fake documents and later offered him 50 per cent of the profits from its redevelopment. However, when that did not happen the businessman filed a complaint," police officials said.
