New Delhi: Delhi's most iconic single-screen theatre Regal Cinema brought its curtains down on Thursday after an eight-decade-long existence. The cinema that was an important part of the city's film culture screened a housefull last show with Raj Kapoor's Sangam after requests by fans. The cinema that was part of many people's childhood and college years shut its doors after 85 years and many Delhiites on Twitter shared their memories.
The Kapoor family has had several of their films screened at the cinema. Actor Rishi Kapoor also reminisced about the theatre.
Situated in Central Delhi's Connaught Place, the theatre was designed by architect Walter Skyes George and opened in 1932. It has hosted personalities like then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, his
daughter Indira Gandhi and megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The owners are planning to return as a multiplex but they say they are still in talks and it may take them a year or so to start the renovation.
It's the end of an era for Delhi movie-goers.
