The rupee crashed to all-time low of 70.09 against the US dollar.

The rupee touched an all-time low of 70.09 per US dollar on Tuesday, two days before Independence Day. As the news broke, Congress were quick to make political capital on social media and posted a sharp tweet directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. "Modiji finally managed to do something that we couldn't do in 70 years," the official handle of the party tweeted, sharing a screenshot of the exchange value. About an hour ago, Congress President Rahul Gandhi also took a dig at PM Modi. In a sarcastic tweet, Mr Gandhi posted an old video of PM Modi's speech from 2012 in which he says the depreciating value of the rupee is because of "corruption in UPA".

"The Indian #Rupee just gave the Supreme Leader, a vote of NO confidence, crashing to a historic low," Mr Gandhi tweeted.

Since being posted, Mr Gandhi's tweet has collected over 6,200 'likes' and more than 3,000 retweets.
