Vadodara:

A bridegroom and his marriage party left the wedding site without the bride after a dispute arose over observing religious rituals in solemnising the marriage at Likhvad village near here.

The incident occurred on Friday last about 160 kms from here. The matter has reached the police, which are now looking into a complaint lodged by the bride, Shanti alias Shantu, and her father Amrutbhai Kulabhai Dahwad.

Investigating Officer Khushal Patel told PTI, "We have been probing the case after receiving the complaint."

In the complaint, Shaniti and her father Amrutbhai Kalubhai Dahwad said the bridegroom Dilip, his father Kalubhai Devaji and mother Jankiben insisted on solemnising the marriage as per Christian laws. The complainant said they were shocked as they had hired the services of a Hindu priest.

The bridegroom and his father had brought a Christian priest along with them to perform the marriage as per Christian rites which was unacceptable to the girl's family.

Efforts were made to resolve the dispute, but when no compromise was reached between the two sides, Dilip and entire marriage party left the village without the bride.

The complainant also alleged Dilip and his parents had demanded a dowry of Rs 50,000 in cash and a motorcycle. Police said they were trying to resolve the issue.
