Beijing:
A research group says the number of people in China using the Internet has reached 420 million, with growth driven by people going online with their cell phones.
China's online population is the world's largest and the Internet's popularity poses challenges to the Communist government that for decades was able to exercise tight control over the flow of information.
The China Internet Network Information Center's report on Thursday shows that the number of Internet users has grown by 36 million in the first six months this year. The increase in mobile Web users is spurred by the launch of third-generation services that support video and other Web products.
