Derek O'Brien will have to wait a little longer to get India's sweetheart Dipa Karmakar's autograph but at least he now knows what her 'daak naam' or nickname is. He's been given the answers to three personal questions he asked the gymnast - she posted the replies on her Twitter account a short while ago.
In a heartfelt open letter to the athlete written for NDTV.com, Derek Da, as he referred to himself, asked Dipa three questions about herself. "If I do have the honour of meeting you, there are three questions I would like answered. These may sound trivial, but I am an unceasing trivia buff," he wrote.
His questions:
- What's your daak naam or nickname?
- What's your favourite dish (fish?)!
- What's been the second most memorable moment of your life?
It's your lucky day, Derek Da, and a rousing cheer for Twitter because not only did Dipa Karmakar read the open letter, she tweeted the Trinamool Congress spokesperson forthwith with her answers.
For Derek O'Brien's information and anyone else who wants to know:
How about that Mr O'Brien?
Dipa Karmakar, the country's first gymnast to qualify for a final event at the Olympics, finished fourth in the women's vault final in Rio. "That fourth place was a leap of faith, a leap of imagination, a leap of hope. A leap for all India. It made me your fan," Mr O'Brien said in his letter.
Guess he's an even bigger fan after Dipa's prompt reply. We know we are.
