Dog files to run for mayor of US city

Houston: Every dog has his day! A dog filed to run for mayor of a US city but the campaign was cut short as the canine's paper work was not in order.

Dylan Westie, a West Highland White Terrier, filed to run for mayor of Irving, Texas, saying in a prepared statement that "a significant portion of council leadership has gone to the dogs."

Mike Howard, the dog's owner, agent and attorney, on Tuesday, filed a petition on the Terrier's behalf to be on the ballot for the May 5 election, CBS News reported.

But the campaign quickly collapsed as Westie's candidate forms were so riddled with technical errors that the city rejected them even before considering his species.

Howard filed the petition, complete with valid signatures to put Dylan's name on the ballot.

The paperwork explained, Dylan is a registered "son of a... female Westie."

However, the city said Dylan's not a registered voter and therefore, does not qualify.

Howard said Dylan has some serious thoughts about the problems plaguing Irving and has even taken to Twitter to have his bark heard.

"He does not do a great job at typing. But... you'll find some really good tweets out there, Howard was quoted as saying.

Howard has been writing political satire since 1984.

On being asked by The Dallas Morning News that why he failed to notarise either his signature as Dylan's affiant or Dylan's signature, he said "It would be a paw print, had I let him sign. I did not want to get ink on his paws."

"He (Dylan) knew it would be an uphill battle. He realised at the onset he would never be able to be qualified. For one, he needs to be a registered voter in Dallas County. Dylan is registered with the American Kennel Club," Howard said.
