A sea turtle that washed up at a beach in Spain is shocking people with its almost monstrous size.
The turtle, measuring almost 7 feet, washed up at a beach in Calella, nearly 60 kilometres from Barcelona. The creature was so big, officials had to call an excavator to lift the creature.
The reptile, identified as a leatherback sea turtle, was reportedly in its advanced stage of decomposition. It has been sent to the veterinarian department of Autonomous University of Barcelona for autopsy.
The size of the ginormous turtle has made it a hit on
social media with several videos floating around.
Leatherback sea turtles are the largest of all turtles. They can grow upto 7 feet in length and weigh upto 900 kilos. The one found in Spain weighed approximately 200 kilos, reported
Radio Calella.
Earlier this month, fishermen in the coastal city of Vilanova i la Geltru had found another leatherback turtle caught in the nets. The carnivorous
Dermochelys coriacea are considered a 'vulnerable' species.
