In an attempt to attract more tourists, rice farmers in Shenyang, the capital of northeast China's Lianoning province took an unusual route: they turned artists. And the results are spectacular.
Rice farmers in the region have an annual tradition of creating paddy designs by carefully planting different strains of rice that develop into various colours and heights. The designs are reportedly decided upon and sketched early in the year, after which the rice is planted. By the time the crop is ready to harvest, the paddy fields are transformed into works of art - some spreading across a staggering 25 acres.
There are dragons, elephants, butterflies and even Master Po Ping from the popular animated series Kung Fu Panda.

Locals say the 3D masterpieces are best viewed from elevated walkways erected around the fields. The best viewing period is from July to September.
