Pet animals caught by surprise by their own reflections in mirrors make for some awesome and hysterical home videos. Turns out, even wild cats, gorillas and elephants react with similar confusion when confronted by their own selves on the other side of a mirror.

As an experiment, French photographer Xavier Hubert Brierre and his wife travelled to Gabon, Africa, and set up several mirrors in different locations to observe wild animals reacting to their reflected selves. The animals didn't disappoint.

Some wanted to pounce at their reflection, some wanted to fight them and others were spooked by what they saw.

"One of them takes several looks at the mirror before it is attacked by a second leopard, who calls off the ambush when he too spots Xavier's mirror," the descriptor for the video says about a leopard.

The spectacular footage has already made the video viral with over 7.9 million views on YouTube.

We don't want to give away too much. Just as the proof of the pudding is in the eating, the brilliance of this video is in the watching.
