The festival of Dussehra marks the victory of good over evil. It also signals the end of Navratri festivities. Vijayadashami also marks the 10th day of the Shardiya Navratri and people across the country burn effigies of Ravana along with his son Meghnath and brother Kumbhkaran. The day also marks the end of the five-day festivities of Durga Puja. On this day, the idols of Goddess Durga are immersed in water bodies. In the south, Dasara is celebrated as victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari over the demon form Mahishasura.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the nation today on Dussehra.  "Best wishes to my family members across the country on Vijayadashami. This holy festival brings the message of ending negative forces as well as adopting goodness in life. Wishing you all a Happy Vijaya Dashami!" he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The Hindu Panchang Calendar states that the auspicious Vijay Muhurat, a period for special ceremonies, will be between 01:58 pm and 02:43 pm today. Dashami Tithi began at 05:44 pm on October 23, and it will end at 03:14 PM on October 24, 2023.
