The Hindu festival of Maha Shivratri is being celebrated across the country today. The festival, celebrated on the new moon of Magh (the eleventh month according to the Hindu calendar), is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. Devotees celebrate the day by visiting temples, observing day-long fasts and chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor, and many other celebrities took to Twitter to wish everyone a Happy Maha Shivratri.

It is believed that worshiping Lord Shiva on this day helps one get rid of all their sins. Another reason the day is celebrated is because it is believed Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married on this day.
