A Colorado policeman is being hailed a hero after a picture of him cradling a two-year-old girl at a car crash site went viral. The officer sang a nursery rhyme to distract the toddler from the crash that killed her father who was at the wheel.

"My daughter, when she falls down and hurts herself, I sing 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star", said Officer Nick Struck to 9NEWS (KUSA). "So I started singing it to the little girl."

The tear-jerking picture was captured by Jessica Matrious, who was driving behind the SUV that crashed. "I pulled over, obviously, and started running to the field to see what I could do," she told 9news.com.

Ms Matrious told 9news.com that the car blew a tire and lost control. "They took an extreme sharp right turn and just immediately started to roll," she added.

According to media reports, the car was carrying six passengers - two adults and four children - none of whom were properly restrained. The mother and one of the children had to be airlifted to a hospital, while two of the other kids were sent to the hospital by an ambulance.

Officer Struck took care of the little girl and kept trying to calm her down by singing to her. "My first thought was that this could've been my daughter, who is also two years old," he told TODAY.com. The little girl too was later taken to the hospital.

"That moment will definitely affect me for the rest of my life," Struck told TODAY.com. "Every girl needs her dad, but I'm happy I was able to be there to help get her through that emotional day."
We hope the little girl's mother and siblings are better soon and reunited with each other.
