The tireless efforts of devoted volunteers and veterinarians have resulted in the rescue and rehabilitation of an injured spotted deer in Chennai.
The inspiring story, shared by IAS officer Supriya Sahu on X (formerly Twitter), talks about the remarkable journey of the deer's recovery and the collaborative efforts that made it possible.
The deer was rescued by the volunteers at the Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary. He was later taken to the advanced facility at Vandalur Zoo.
Under the care of Dr Sridhar, a team of skilled veterinarians embarked on a delicate surgical procedure to mend the deer's fractured leg. Describing the procedure, Supriya Sahu shared, “The beautiful little spotted deer that you see in the video is recovering well after he was found with a fractured leg in Chennai. Volunteers at the Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary rescued him carefully and brought him to the advanced facility at Vandalur Zoo.”
The surgery, conducted under general anaesthesia, involved the placement of external skeletal fixators with clamps and screws to stabilise the fracture.
Through the combined efforts of the Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary, the Vandalur Zoo veterinarians, and the facilitation by the Chennai wildlife warden, the deer underwent a successful operation, paving the way for its eventual recovery.
