"I am not only finished with practice, but my 2015 US Open is finished without any beginning," she wrote in a blog post.
Everyone knows now that that Russian third seed Maria Sharapova has had to pull out of US Open due to a leg injury, but until yesterday, this was the tennis star's "little secret."
"I am not only finished with practice, but my 2015 US Open is finished without any beginning," she wrote in a blog post while sitting in her car after her practice at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Before she let the world into her 'secret,' it was just Sharapova trying to come to terms with the decision. And she did this by putting her musings into words.
"The clock has hit 4:17pm on Louis Armstrong. I just sat down on the chair, but my eyes are fixed on this little kid, twitching impatiently next to his mom - 'is she finished already? I have this big fat tennis ball I really, really need her to sign and my ice cream cone is melting,'" she wrote in her blog.
She goes on to mention the hundreds of spectators - families, their kids, grandparents - watching her practice just before the US Open. The sight was so "remarkable" she asked her coach to take a panorama picture. "Somewhere in the mix, might even be the coach of my next opponent, scouting. Don't waste your time, it won't be me," she said in her post.
Her thoughts eventually travelled back to the kid with the melting ice cream. She wanted to share her "little secret" with him, "but I don't want to let anyone down."
And even while pondering over the end of her US Open campaign, Sharapova's thoughts jumped tracks again, this time to Harry Potter.
"I've got these eerie invisible elfs (elves) floating around my head, is this really an appropriate time for Harry Potter flashbacks?" she writes. "Come back later please!" she urged the floating elves.
It's the end of her post that will make you smile though. From the elves, her thoughts jumped to finding perspective and then to hankerings that needed her attention.
"I'm smiling now because perspective is charming and just fyi, I'm craving that little boy's ice cream cone. Guess I'll just have to find my way through midtown tonight, in search of that annoying truck melody," she wrote.
There's also a little promise she made in her post, more to herself it seems than to anyone else. "New York City, this wasn't my year but I will be back!"
