Jupiter to rise, set opposite Sun on Friday

New Delhi:

Sky gazers can watch the biggest planet Jupiter rise and set opposite the Sun on Friday night, forming a straight line with the Earth coming between the two.

"On August 14, the king planet Jupiter will be at opposition or 180 degrees from the Sun in the sky," SPACE Director C B Devgun said.

Jupiter at opposition will rise opposite the Sun at sunset, climb highest overhead at midnight and set opposite the Sun at sunrise, he said.

When the Jovian planet will be at or near opposition, Earth comes closest to it and the biggest planet will shine brightly in the sky.

Jupiter will be glowing at -2.9 magnitude (in comparison Sirius, the brightest star in night sky is of -1.4 magnitude and full moon at -12.7 magnitude).

Astro enthusiasts can see Sun, Earth and Jupiter make a straight line in the sky, Devgun said.

The exact time of Jupiters opposition is 22:40 PM, while it will be 4.0278 Astronomical Units (AU) from the Earth and 52 degrees above the horizon, R C Kapoor of Indian Institute of Astrophysics said.
