Luxury Toilet Constructed for Thai Princess Visiting Cambodia

Thai Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is visiting Cambodia and a luxurious bathroom worth a whopping $40,000 has been built for her three-day trip, reports The Guardian.

Built on the banks of Lake Yeak Laom in Ratanakkiri province, the 8-square-meter bathroom reportedly has an imported commode and is fully air-conditioned. It took two weeks to build and costs 66 times the average annual salary in Cambodia, reports The Guardian.

However, the most shocking part about the lakeside bathroom is that it will be dismantled after the royal visit. "This toilet was constructed for the Thai princess' use. When the princess has finished with it, they will take the toilet equipment back to Thailand, but the princess will leave the building for our community to use," Ven Churk, head of the Yeak Lom Lake committee told CambodiaDaily.com.

The luxury spend has not gone down well with many. Calling it "an insult to the Cambodian people", former journalist Andrew MacGregor Marshall told Independent.co.uk: "Most Cambodians have limited access to modern sanitation. For the cost of Sirindhorn's toilet - to be used just for a single night - whole Cambodian villages could have been provided with proper sanitation."

The Thai Princess will also have private use of the lake on Monday. During her stay, the Thai Princess will reportedly inaugurate a health center and a technology institute. She will also visit some primary schools, along with meeting King Norodom Sihamoni, Cambodia.
