In case the growing number of local stores and even vegetable/fruit vendors accepting app-based payments or plastic currency isn't evidence enough, here's definitive proof the country's really trying to embrace the concept of cashless transactions. A man in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, apparently paid for using a restroom by cheque, making it out to 'Public Toilet.' The payment was Rs 5.
In a post shared on December 2, Facebook user Brm Muralidharan shared a picture of the cheque, which has since been invoking mixed reactions on the social networking site.
"Country moving towards 'Cashless Economy.' Payment made by cheque for Rs. 5 for using the Public Toilet in Madurai, TN. Goosebumps!!" Mr Muralidharan wrote on Facebook.
On November 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. It caused a huge stir in the country with citizens lining up at banks to deposit and/or exchange their old notes for the new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes. Since then, plastic currency and app-based payments have become the preferred method for transactions. And while no one can argue that the cash crunch is very real, writing a cheque for Rs 5 seems a little extreme.
We can't confirm the veracity of the cheque or the incident but people obviously have a lot to say about this.
Others also wanted some serious questions about this transaction answered.
