69-year-old Maye Musk has been modelling for years and just became the face of cosmetics brand CoverGirl
Silver-haired Maye Musk is the mother of three and grandmother of 10. In fact, you may just have heard of her son, Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk. The 69-year-old has been a model for the past five decades and is now the face of American cosmetics brand CoverGirl. The brand says Ms Musk, who ruled the runways at New York Fashion Week, is "a true testament to unapologetically embracing one's unique beauty."
Announcing the news on Instagram, Ms Musk writes: "Who knew, after many years of admiring the gorgeous COVERGIRL models, that I would be one at 69 years of age? It just shows, never give up... Beauty truly is for women of all ages."
Ms Musk has modelled since the age of 15 in South Africa where she migrated with her Canadian parents as a child. She has two Master of Science degrees in dietetics and nutrition and for decades, has worked as a nutritionist.
Last year, at 68, she signed with IMG - one of the world's most prestigious modelling agencies - and is being hailed by many as the fashion world's latest "it" model.
With her latest beauty campaign, Ms Musk says she's "just getting started."
Ms Musk was recently on the cover of Vogue Korea and has developed something of a cult-following on social media.
Ms Musk, who regularly shares pictures with her 62,000 followers on Instagram, says social media "helps a lot" and that clients like booking a model "who has a reputation and is well known."
Discussing her show-stopping silver hair, Ms Musk says as she neared 60, she decided to leave her hair natural. "I just was tired of coloring (it)," she explains.
When it comes to her recent success, other factors, she says are an ageing population and the fact that there is "not much competition" when it comes to models hovering around the septuagenarian stage.
"I appreciate every last bit," Ms Musk says. "All the people really love us," she says, of how older models are received on the runway.
"I think designers are figuring that out... They just want to show there is diversity and that they appreciate older women and why not? Everybody has a mother and a grandmother," she says.
And in case you're wondering, yes, she does drive a Tesla.
