Quality complaints dog iPhone launch

New York: Apple's new iPhone is one of the most anticipated smart phone launches of the year. So, with reports of poor reception and screen issues appearing on the Web, questions are arising as to whether the iPhone 4 is a dud.

The most widely discussed are reports that holding the phone a certain way can interfere with calls. (Read: On new iPhone, a mystery of dropped calls)

Lawrence Ho of New Jersey says he's seen the issue with his new iPhone.

He says, "If you hold it in your left palm and it kind of connects the two spots, the reception drops down for a little bit. Right now it doesn't seem to be happening but it's only once in a while."

Apple has acknowledged that there have been complaints, but said that the reception problem is a fact of life for smart phones.

Apple says, "Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

It's too early to tell if the problem is widespread, and the issue isn't raising many eyebrows outside the Apple store in New York City.

"I'm not worried about it. Anytime you have a massive production of products, you are going to have some issues like that," says Jose Vasquez.

It could be a problem because they're mass produced. I'm just hoping mine doesn't have that problem."

Another issue of concern is the iPhone's glass enclosure, which some worry could be prone to scratches and cracks.

But that concern has dogged the device since its launch in 2007.

Just ask Flavia Nordio. Her original iPhone works just fine, despite the smashed glass screen.

She says, "It's still working. I had a phone call from Italy and it works perfectly."

So, is the iPhone 4 all that it's cracked up to be? Only time will tell.
