A white-coloured zebra was spotted at Serengeti National Park.
A rare zebra with no black stripes on its back has been spotted at a park in Tanzania. A video of the albino zebra, named Ndasiata, was shared by the Serengeti National Park on Instagram. It shows the foal roaming in a field with other zebras, which have regular black-and-white stripes. Ndasiata is covered mostly in white fur, with only a few faint black lines on its neck, head and body.
In the caption, the Serengeti National Park wrote, “A young zebra with albinism called “Ndasiata” is still roaming in Serengeti plains.”
The video has stunned social media users.
“Astonishing great work this is so beautiful would really love to see it,” said a person.
Another wrote, “Another reason to visit the Serengeti.”.
A user said that he has planned a trip to Serengeti in July. “How beautiful. Maybe we can get a glimpse on our trip in July,” he wrote.
Albinism is a condition when cells don't produce melanin, a pigment that gives colour to the skin. For Ndasiata, this is a problem. The black-and-white stripes on the body of these animals help them camouflage against predators. Albino animals often have poor eyesight which puts them at a disadvantage.
However, Ndasiata has managed to thrive in the park so far. Some users nonetheless have called on the national park authorities to take care of Ndasiata as predators could attack it relatively easily.
“Beautiful. Please take care of him/her to ensure the predators don't get to him/her. Also, spotted baby Zebra born in Kenya some years back. Hope he/she is okay,” a comment read.
Echoing a similar sentiment, another said, “This zebra should be protected”.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, the albino zebra is thought to be eight months old.
