Rare cardiac surgery performed at Andhra hospital

Hyderabad: A significant advance in surgical treatment of coronary artery diseases, using a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS CABG) and Medtronic stabilisation and positioning devices, was performed at the KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad.

Although minimally invasive surgeries are common, they are useful only when there are single blocks. But in this particular procedure the doctors, using a beating heart procedure and without cutting the chest bone (sternotomy) made a very small incision of only 5 to 7 cms under the left breast for clearing multiple blocks.

This way there is no surgical scar, lesser stay in the hospital, faster recovery of the patient, use of less blood during the procedure and considerable reduction in pain, doctors said.

Addressing the media on Friday, B Bhaskar Rao, a cardio thoracic surgeon and Joseh F Sabik from Cleveland, US, who is here on invitation to train the doctors in this procedure, said globally 6,75,000 patients require some form of coronary artery bypass surgery each year.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is a surgical procedure that restores blood flow to the portion of the heart that has blocked arteries.

Under this, doctors can safely and effectively suture coronary artery bypass grafts in place with an almost invisible surgical scar, he said.
