Shimla:
Patients in snowbound and remote villages of Himachal Pradesh are getting access to specialised medical services without having to travel long distance for an examination because of the successful running of the telemedicine project in the state.
The project was jointly launched by Department of Information Technology (DIT) and the Department of Health in March 2008, keeping in mind the acute shortage of doctors in remote areas and tough geographical locations of hill state, B K Agarwal, secretary Information and Technology, said.
The project is being operated with the technical support from the CDAC Mohali, he said.
Under the telemedicine system, several zonal, regional and circle hospitals have been connected with telemedicine facility through dedicated ISDN lines with a total cost of Rs 4.51 crore, Agarwal said.
The latest initiative in the project envisages connecting 19 health centres at district, block and tehsil headquarters with IGMC Shimla and PGI Chandigarh through ISDN link to facilitate experts advice, he added.
