As modern Indian women go about their daily business dressed, more often than not, in pants, jeans, dresses and skirts, the saree may occupy that corner of the wardrobe reserved for special occasions but it certainly hasn't lost its lustre - far from it. It continues to be stored carefully, handed down over generations and worn on big days.
The saree, however, deserves much more and it's trying very hard. By reinventing itself constantly, this six yard garment is going the whole nine yards to be a part of our daily lives.
In this, the saree is getting a hand from best friends Anju Maudgal Kadam and Ally Matthan, creators of an initiative to promote the wearing of sarees that's gathering steam on social media. The world is welcome to join in their #100sareepact, which is a promise to wear sarees on 100 days this year.
In a recent tweet, the duo encapsulated the thought behind this pact.
