Photos from Kerala-based label Red Lotus featuring transgender models
You might have seen these pictures on your Facebook timeline. Kerala-based designer Sharmila Nair, who runs a sari label called Red Lotus, recently released a series of photos from her latest campaign featuring two transgender models. The photos were posted on the official page of the label and went viral in a short period of time.
Maya Menon and Gowri Savithri, the models who feature in the photoshoot, are pictured draped in handloom cotton saris from a collection named Mazhavi, the Malayalam word for rainbow. The saris are crafted in colours like yellow, lavender, red, orange and green, which represent the global LGBT community flag.
A post from Ms Nair says she wanted to "focus on the plight of the ostracized transgender community by getting to come to the limelight."
"Mission accomplished," it ends.
Last November, Kerala became the first state to unveil an official transgender policy, which would empower 25,000 transgender residents and provide them a right to equality, dignity and development.
The response to the photos from Red Lotus' campaign has been encouraging, as comments on the pictures prove. Here are some images:
