"We only become 'Indian' when we're playing a cricket tournament or we're playing Pakistan in the World Cup. That's not what an Indian Identity is about," says a Mumbai teacher and social activist on the Humans of Bombay Facebook page. Her post, shared some six hours before writing this, has over 8000 'likes' and over 900 shares.
This woman, name not revealed, is proud to belong to the "first generation born after Independence" and has done some brilliant work for society. She's fought for the basic rights of women in slums and against dowry in Maharashtra, convincing 11 villages to give up on the practice. She even contested elections when urged by those she helped.
Now, this fearless woman has been working as a teacher for the past 13 years to "instill the 'Indian Identity' in this generation." And her definition of 'Indian Identity' is something we all need in our lives.
