Traffic constable taken for a ride!

Pune:

In an incident that resembled a stunt scene straight from movies, a man sped his car through a city lane with a traffic constable clinging precariously to the bonnet.

The car was brought to a grinding halt only after gun shots were fired, rupturing the speeding vehicle's tyres, police said.

Earlier, the car, driven by Kamal Jain, a Canada-based NRI, was spotted in front of a hotel in a no-parking zone following which the traffic policeman tried to fix a jammer to book the owner for violation, they said.

However, when Jain saw the Constable near the car, he made his way to the steering wheel and started the vehicle in a jiffy. He did not stop even when the cop, after failing to hold him back, stepped on to the bonnet.

With the constable 'glued' to the windscreen for his life, Jain drove through the Cantonment area at speed over 60 km per hour, police said, adding four pedestrians were injured as the people on streets ran helter skelter.

Around this time DCP Ravindra Sengaonkar happened to be taking that route when he saw the car with the constable on bonnet. He gave a chase and when efforts to stop Jain proved futile, he fired shots from his revolver to puncture tyres.

Jain was taken in custody by police who were hard-pressed for VVIP 'bandobast' as Vice President Hamid Ansari was here. Police said they were probing whether the man, said to be attached to a private firm, suffered from any mental ailment.
