Sydney, Australia: An Australian ambulance crew carrying a dying woman to hospital took a detour to grant her final wish -- to visit the beach one last time.
"Tears were shed and the patient felt very happy," the ambulance service posted on its Facebook page alongside a photo showing a paramedic beside a stretcher facing the ocean at Hervey Bay, on Australia's east coast.
"A crew were transporting a patient to the palliative care unit of the local Hospital and the patient expressed that she just wished she could be at the beach again," the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said in the message posted on Thursday.
"Sometimes it is not the drugs/training/skills - sometimes all you need is empathy to make a difference!"
"What an incredible gift you gave this patient. Has warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes," comments one person on the post.
"Thank you to all past, present and future ambulance officers. You are in a career that has way more lows than highs. You see people at their worst and only a glimpse of them at their best, yet day in and day out you turn up for work ready to hold our lives in your hands. Thank you for showing compassion and love to fellow humans at such a fragile time in their lives," adds a third.
