Even those with little experience in the stages of panda life could recognize the importance of what happened this week at the National Zoo. Bei Bei, the newborn panda cub, took his first step Monday.
The zoo showed video on its Twitter feed.
"One small step for panda" read the message on the Facebook page of the Smithsonian Institution's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.
"One adorably wobbly moment for all of us," the posting added.
It reported that under the watchful eye of the cub's mother, Mei Xiang, Bei Bei took his first steps around 4:50 p.m.
The zoo said the cub will probably start wandering about, leaving the den on his own to explore his indoor enclosure.
