You're 14. You're on your first date EVER. And you're chaperoned by your dad, who insists not only on taking you to the sushi restaurant you've chosen but also on remaining in the restaurant all through the meal.

What a romance killer.

Daddy sits at what he thinks is a safe distance from you and your date - five tables away.

But, and it's the biggest possible 'but' in a teenager's life, daddy also happens to be David Beckham and so there's absolutely no chance your romantic excursion, on Valentine's Day no less, is going to escape unnoticed for long.

Brooklyn Beckham, now 16, was outed on The Late Late Show with James Corden by his footballer father in the embarrassing manner that parents have.

On the March 30 episode of the chat show, Beckham regaled his host, fellow guests Claire Danes and Breaking Bad actor Bob Odenkirk, and the audience, which included his blushing son, with the hilarious story of how he crashed Brooklyn's introduction to dating by tagging along.

In his defence, he didn't want to.

The 39-year-old father of four revealed that it was wife Victoria who refused to allow Brooklyn go unchaperoned on the date and insisted David go along too.

"Really, you're going to make me do that?" Beckham asked his wife. To which, Victoria said, "Yeah, that's the only way I'm going to let him go."

And so, he dutifully went and sat five tables away.

If you think that's bad, spare a thought for daughter Harper Beckham, now four. When she begins dating, her father says he's 'going to get closer' than five tables.

Beckham also told the audience why he and his designer wife forced their son to get a job at 'a small French café in London' when he turned 14.

"You know what kids are like! They want new soccer boots. They want new sneakers. It came to the point where he turned 14 and I thought, 'If you want something then go and work, and then you've got your own money," he said.
