Why Haryana Asked Parents to Send in Selfies With Daughters
Village Sarpanch Sunil Jaglan said that the objective of the contest was to contribute to the "Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao" campaign.
A village panchayat in Haryana found a unique way to spread the 'save the girl child' message. They've just held a "selfie with daughter" contest in which parents had to send across selfies taken with their daughters. Just like any contest, this one too had trophies, certificates and cash prizes to be won.

The one-of-its kind contest received about 800 entries from all over the country. According to BBC.com, the winners declared last week include parents Amit and Rita who shared a photo of themselves with their daughter Vanshika.

"My daughter is five years old," Amit told BBC.com, adding "I want to give her the best education".

Another winner of the contest was this selfie sent by Aamar Dagar from Delhi, along with his daughter Palak.

Bhup Singh from Jind also won for his selfie with his daughters Tanya and Sara, according to The Indian Express.

Village Sarpanch Sunil Jaglan had told PTI earlier that the objective of the contest was to contribute to the "Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao" campaign. "Clicking selfies is the latest craze, so we decided to hold this contest to encourage parents to take pictures with their daughters," he said.

The initiative has been well-received across the country, especially since in Haryana the sex ratio at birth is 874 girls to 1000 boys, making it amongst the lowest in the country.
