On World Emoji Day, July 17, Apple unveiled a slew of emojis that include a woman in a hijab or headscarf, a woman breastfeeding her child and a man meditating while seated in padmasana or the cross-legged yoga pose. The new emojis will be available later this year but the announcement already has the Internet buzzing with reactions.
The headscarf-wearing emoji was approved by Unicode, a non-profit international consortium, in November last year after 15-year-old Saudi student living in Germany campaigned for its inclusion.
Many tweeted how excited they were to see "diversity in emoji."
But the emoji also sparked negative reactions online, with some calling the hijab "a symbol of oppression."
Others couldn't simply couldn't get why people were getting so worked up over an emoji.
