Haridwar:

A couple who was staying at a guest house in Haridwar were dragged out of their room by local men and beaten up, in a case of alleged moral policing.

The couple was thrashed and humiliated by more than a dozen men to keep the "sanctity of the holy city alive", locals of Piran Kaliyar area of the city said.

They allege that some 50 to 60 guest houses in the area are used to promote "illicit relationships".

With the couple too scared to launch a complaint, the incident was brought to light only after a video of the incident started circulating in the city.

"There's a sex racket going on here. We were compelled to pick up the arms. The administration has not done anything," a resident Irfan Ahmed said.

Istekar another local resident said, "Piran Kaliyar is an upright village. But there is a prostitution racket going on here. We complained about it many times but no action has been taken."

The clip showed  a group of people beating up the couple and trying to take the stole of the woman off.  The duo finally managed to escape on a motorcycle.

Police told NDTV that they had arrested two people and registered a case against 15 to 20 unknown people.
