Frustrated with her parents trying to marry her off by force, a minor girl today tried to commit suicide by jumping from the first floor of a police station in Jamshedpur.
However, policemen saved her before she was able to leap from the balcony of Sonari police station.
The 16-year-old girl, whose wedding had been 'fixed' on Thursday, came to the police station to complain that her parents were trying to marry her off by force but she wanted to continue with her studies, officer-in-charge of Sonari police station Amish Hussain said.
Her parents too reached the police station from their Budhram Mohalla home and started reprimanding the girl who then had a heated exchange of words with her mother.
At one point, she ran to the first floor and was about to jump from the balcony when she was rescued, Hussain said.
The girl alleged that she was being tortured by her parents as she was opposed to the marriage, while her mother claimed her daughter declined to marry the selected groom as she was having an affair with a boy, the official said.
Hussain said an FIR was registered under the Child Marriage Act has been registered against her parents while a recommendation has been made to the district official for her rehabilitation.
The girl has been handed over to the Child Welfare Committee, police said.
