Jamui:
Four women sitting on the side of a road to beat the summer heat were crushed to death by a speeding truck in Jamui district of Bihar, a police officer said today.
The accident happened on Sikandara - Sheikhpura road near Tridiha Musahri village at midnight.
The deceased have Rita Devi (30), Asha Devi (27) and Keshri Devi (22). They all were residents of Tridiha Musahri. Among them Anita was pregnant.
Siakandara Station House Officer Sanjay Kumar said the accident happened at around 12 am today while the women were sitting on the side of the road due to the severe summer heat.
"A speeding truck ran over the four women while trying to overtake another truck. The errant driver escaped with the vehicle. The incident led to tension in the area," mr Kumar added.
The police sent the bodies to Jamui Sadar Hospital for postmortem.
Sikandara Block Development Officer Vikas Kumar rushed to the spot and gave Rs 3,000 each under Kabir Antyesti Yojana (state scheme for last rites) to the families of the victims and handed over cheques of Rs 20,000 each as compensation.
