Panaji:
Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat today announced various schemes, including monetary help for the mother of a new-born girl child, for improving declining sex ratio in the state.
The sex ratio was 1000:1071 in 1961 as against 1000:961 in 2001, Kamat said in his budget speech while launching several schemes to encourage the birth of the girl child in the state.
"A financial incentive of Rs.5,000 will be provided to the mother soon after delivery of the girl child, provided it is not her third child, so that her post-delivery nutritional requirements are taken care of", he said, adding that a provision of Rs.5.50 crore had been made in the budget for the purpose.
Another scheme proposed in the budget says the state government will open a fixed deposit (FD) account in the name of the girl child and deposit a specified amount in it.
"We will provide free school uniforms (two sets) and text books up to 12th standard and also a chair, a table and a table lamp", he said announcing financial assistance to the parents for the marriage of their daughters.
The Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar said the solutions provided in the budget (to check declining sex ratio) are good for states like Madhya Pradesh.
"Money is not the only criteria why a girl child is killed in womb", he said, adding that social pressure dictates having a male child.
Parrikar said it was the educated class in Goa which is "contributing" to the skewed sex ratio.
