Secunderabad: For the last few days, doctors, paramedical staff and workers at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad had been complaining of a clogged drain and a stench from the sewer line.
When cleaners went to investigate the blockage in the drain, next to the Hospital Superintendent's office, they were shocked. Jutting out of an open manhole at the back of the hospital were a pair of legs.
"We were complaining about the smell. Many people hang around here. The body was probably found after a couple of days of being there," said a woman cleaner, who did not want to be identified.
"He is not from among the hospital staff for sure," she said.
The decomposing body of a man, in his mid-30s, was pulled out using ropes. North Zone DCP Prakash Reddy said they have registered a case of suspicious death. He has not yet been identified. Police are awaiting forensic report to know if he was drunk at the time of fall.
"He might have accidentally fallen into the open manhole about two to three days ago," Mr Reddy said.
The incident happened on the same day that two snakes were found in a hospital in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district.
The hospital was the same one where a 10-year-old baby boy had died late last month after being bitten by rats in the intensive care unit or ICU.
