Amid High Drama, UP Cop Detained in Bihar for Allegedly Seeking Bribe, Released Later

The UP Police Crime Branch Inspector was apprehended by undercover cops

Patna: A police officer from Uttar Pradesh, accused of seeking a bribe, was caught in dramatic fashion by the Bihar Police in Patna on Sunday, but was later released as no bribe money was found on him.

UP Police Crime Branch Inspector Sarva Chandra and a few other cops, all from Meerut, were in Patna to question a mobile shop owner here in a case of forgery and extortion. The shop owner had earlier in the day lodged a complaint with the Patna Police saying the UP cops were asking for bribes in the case or threatening arrest.

"UP Police Crime Branch Inspector Sarva Chandra came here with his team to probe a case of forgery and extortion. He was caught by the City SP Shivdeep Lande after a complaint was received from one Pankaj Kumar that he was asking for bribe in relation with a case," Patna Senior Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana said.

The Patna Police say they set up a trap for this cop at the city's main Dak Bangla intersection, but he was apprehended by undercover cops including the city's top police officer Shivdeep Lande, known as much for his flamboyance as his policing, before he could take the bribe money as he had grown suspicious.

Despite the drama, the inspector had to be released by the Bihar Police after his statement was recorded. The Patna Senior Superintendent of Police has asked for a report in the matter.
