Garbage has started piling up in capital town Patna with about 4,000 employees of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) going on strike in support of their demand including hike in wage for daily workers and life-long pension for family of deceased employees.
The PMC workers continued to strike work for the second day today.
"We have decided to observe three day strike (till tomorrow) and if our demands are not met employees would go on indefinite strike from February 12," said Neeraj Kumar Verma, General Secretary of PMC Employees Union.
There are around 4,000 workers in the PMC of which 1,500 are permanent and rest 2,500 daily wagers.
Mr Verma said talks with the PMC Commissioner Jai Singh did not bear fruit on not agreeing to increase wage of daily workers to Rs 306 a day from Rs 250 daily now equivalent to the amount given to daily wagers in water board.
There was no agreement on providing life-long pension to family of the deceased employee which is only for five years now, he said.
PMC Commissioner Jai Singh said that during talks last evening "we gave a positive assurance to the striking employees' representatives that their two demands including increase in wage and life-long pension would be considered sympathetically after assessing the financial implications".
Describing the attitude of striking employees as "irresponsible", the Commissioner said an alternative arrangement would be made if the employees go on indefinite strike.
He said PMC would advertise the steps taken for employees in the newspapers to make citizens aware of the truth.
With PMC vehicles and workers off, garbage has started piling up in the city much to the discomfort of citizens.
