Rare pink diamond sells for record 29 million pounds
A 24.78 carat fancy intense pink diamond that is regarded as one of the most desirable and beautiful in the world was sold for a record $46.16 million (29 million pounds) making it the most expensive piece of jewellery to be bought at auction, Sotheby's Auction House said. Sotheby's had valued the 24.78 carat Fancy Intense Pink diamond mounted on a ring at $27-38 million ahead of the sale in a luxury lakeside hotel in Geneva. The gemstone, rated among a type that accounts for just two percent of diamonds, was last seen on the market about 60 years ago when it was sold by legendary US jeweller Harry Winston. “It's very wearable and the perfect size. It's a stone that has huge character and appeal." David Bennett, chairman for Europe and the Middle East at Sotheby's international jewellery department said.

The 24.78 carat fancy intense pink diamond was bought by British billionaire Laurence Graff, 72, who described it as the “most fabulous” diamond he had ever seen. "Laurence Graff is clearly a connoisseur of gemstones. Any connoisseur of gemstone would realise that this is a stone to own. Had I the money, I would have bought it myself," said David Bennett, chairman for Europe and the Middle East at Sotheby's international jewellery department.(Photo: AFP)
